Behind the Scenes with Broadway Star Carolee Carmello for The New York Times

I had the absolute pleasure of doing hair and makeup for the incredible Carolee Carmello for her  New York Times interview. Working with a Broadway star like Carolee was such a joy, she was very kind and down-to-earth.

Carolee is a three-time Tony Award nominee with an amazing career spanning over 30 years. She has starred in so many Broadway’s productions, including Parade, Scandalous, Lestat, The Addams Family, and Finding Neverland.

Her presence on stage is just so powerful, you totally get why people are drawn to her. Being part of the Broadway world, especially in New York where theater is such a big deal, it’s amazing to see someone like Carolee do what she does. She’s the kind of performer that makes you remember why live theater is still alive and loved by so many.

For her makeup look we went a bit heavier than everyday wear would be, to make sure it photographed well, using matte foundation, extra powder and neutral lipstick tone, that is still pigmented enough to look good on camera. I used warm tones to enhance her features. Her hair was styled in soft curls to frame her face and give it some natural movement, creating a polished yet effortless feel for the shoot.

It was such an inspiring experience to work with Carolee.
